Rule 18 of the Rules of Procedure of the Judicial Inquiry Commission gives the Commission discretion to render Advisory Opinions relating to judicial ethics to judges upon request. To date, the Commission has issued 962 Advisory Opinions.

If any judge has a question about whether potential future conduct may violate any Canons, the judge may request either informal advice or a formal Advisory Opinion. Judges can call the office at (334) 242-4089 to discuss or explain any questions, but to facilitate a response, the Commission asks judges to submit any questions or requests in writing, which can be emailed to jic@jic.alabama.gov.

The opinions are searchable via the search bar below. To use Boolean operators, use AND or NOT (i.e., “cats NOT dogs“ or “cats AND dogs“).
